Prologue; The Healers have established hospitals and care centers throughout the ancient lands once known as North America. Their offspring, The Great Healers, have evolved into beings of such power as have never been seen before. They remain Human Hybrid Warriors like their ancestors; the limits of their power has yet to be determined. The first Great Healers, Ton and Kal, have returned to the lands of their birth with others of their kind, determined to bring civilization back to the lands lost during the Great Upheaval thousands of years earlier. In this, they have the full support of their fellow Warriors and the rulers of Three Kingdoms. They have established a new COLONY at the ancient site of Charleston Lagoon.

Hybrid; Correct term is Human Hybrid, created by exchange of blood fluids with two hybrids known as makers, progenitors of the race were Roger and Little Bear, somewhat sensitive to strong light, can change shape in many forms, extremely powerful mind-speakers, can combine with other Hybrids or Turned Vampires to create extremely powerful long range mind-sweeps, cannot tell a falsehood because of mind to mind meld contact, can read minds of humans and turned vampires, believed to be able to control human minds or plant false images, vampiric but consider drinking human blood for food to be an abomination, there is a life-long maker/childe relationship, cannot create or bear young, have an almost fanatic urge to protect humans particularly children, have an intense hatred of those who would harm humans particularly children slavers, can be savage fighters of great ferocity, life span unknown but believed to be greater than 2,000 years, form life long relationship with their mate, only occur in the male form – no known female Hybrids exist, it is not known how many mated pairs exist in any when, also known as Spirit Warriors, Roger was the first Captain of Hybrids, omnivores
Turned Vampire; Created only by the exchange of blood fluids with a Hybrid (see Hybrid above), light sensitive, strong sunlight is fatal, cannot create other turned vampires, cannot create or bear young, vampiric, however consider drinking human blood for food abominable, life span less than 2,000 years, mind-speakers, cannot tell a falsehood because of mind to mind meld contact, extremely loyal to their maker, referred to as childe, omnivores, they can be created Hybrid.
Human Sensitive; Many Humans have rudimentary mind-speak abilities, most are unaware of their ability, however, the ability is increasing. Humans who have worked with the Human Hybrids have developed their mind-speak abilities to a greater degree than those who have not been exposed to the Hybrids. Humans, under ideal circumstances, are able to mind-meld with Human Hybrids, however there is considerable risk to the humans doing so. Humans specially trained are able to meld without risk.
This story is a continuation of the tale begun in the “The Healers” Series. To understand parts of this story, you should first read that series, especially the last Book, “The Colony”

From Book 3; All was well in the civilized world, there was peace and harmony everywhere and Humankind was taking advantage of it with rapid advancements in learning and technology. Populations were surging and farm production in the NAC and also in Australia was booming. Every once in a while, folks would catch a glimpse of glowing balls of light in the sky, but no attention was paid to them. As in all the history of Humankind during the good times, there was always a “snake in the Garden of Eden”! There was trouble brewing in the dark continent of Africa, it would be a while before it raised its ugly head, but it was not in the nature of the Human Hybrids to become complacent, they knew from bitter experience that the best way to avoid trouble was to be ready for it.

Chapter 1 – EXPANSION

Nearly every week a cargo ship would dock at Creek Village, loaded with freight and emigrants for the North American Colony.

Light manufacturing had taken root, several lumber mills had been started and a number of canneries had sprung up to process the abundance of the Colony’s farms.

Work had begun on Colony University and an enterprising retired sailor had purchased a wrecked skimmer from the Colony’s Navy and had converted its small reactor and engine to become a heavy freight hauler. It was a frequent sight along the wagon road between Creek Village and Lui. During the harvest season, it towed several large wagons behind it, filled with fruit and produce for the canneries. He even rigged a passenger wagon to carry passengers into or from the interior.

They had pushed the telephone system as far as the ancient city of Crus, just north of the northern border of the Land of the Herders. The villages and small towns on the western side of the Great Inland Sea were tied into the telephone system by a radio link and a large, regional hospital was nearly completed at The Lake.

A continuing trickle of refugees from the ice lands of the far north were coming south, the Flying Healer Service would usually spot them and help them on their way.

Creek Village had the largest concentration of Warriors Great Healers that had ever been assembled in the known world and the Turned Vampire, Palo, Fort Healer’s Major Domo, kept track of each and every one of them.

Ton and Kal, Lords Prince Great Healers had moved the entire administration of both Warriors Great Healers and Warriors Healers to Fort Healer in the NAC and enlarged the Hospital to 350 beds.

All Human Hybrid Warriors had Healer abilities, but there were some that had heightened Healer skills. The Warriors Great Healers, while still Warriors, had healing skills whose limits had yet to be discovered.

The two Hospital Ships had been transferred to The NAC Navy and an order was placed for the construction of a third ship.

Rear Admiral David Bledsoe was promoted to full Admiral and assumed command of all Military Forces of the NAC. Slowly, the Naval Forces maintained by the Three Kingdoms were also being transferred to the NAC. Unfortunately, that position took him from active sea service, much to his own disappointment.

Malcolm Forbes was promoted to Brigadier General Forbes and commanded all the Marine Forces of the combined navies. The Marines also provided the land based military forces whenever it was needed, they had decided a separate land army was not needed.

Guided by the philosophy of his leaders, he drilled his men relentlessly, knowing that a force ready was a force that would survive. The NAC Marine Corps motto was, “WE ARE READY” and they intended to live up to it. From their very beginning, the Armed Forces of the NAC had been closely associated with the Warriors Healers and they were not about to change that.

Off duty Marines and Sailors could always be found entertaining the children in their wards at the hospital, helping boys in their games and assisting teachers in their classrooms. There were always a group of Marines at the town park, ready to join with children in their games or to tell them stories and there was continuous football and baseball games during times that school was not in session.

Stories of the Warriors and Healers were always in demand and who better to tell the story than an old grizzled Marine who had been with those Gentle Beings going to war since their very beginning.

General Forbes established the Marine Lifesaving Service and recruited Human Sensitives to man Lifesaving Stations along the Coasts.

One such station was established on the coast of what was once Georgia. A young Marine Corporal, Cpl. Deni Talbot was on duty. Deni was a talented Human Sensitive of great power and range. He had just settled at his shift, mind searching for those in trouble on the coastal waters, when he detected a faint call, “Help us, Please, in the name of God, HELP US!”

Deni immediately went on alert and responded, “Where are you” They could not hear him, the folks calling him had not the range.

He called for help and two other Marine Sensitives ran to meld with him. They had been taught how to perform a mind meld by the Turned Vampire instructors at Colony University. With the increased power of the meld, he was able to contact the caller easily. The caller was a frightened teen, “Help us, PLEASE, we are sinking and our father has been hurt. I cannot wake him!”

Deni pushed the emergency alarm that was connected to the Dispatch Center at Fort Healer.

He continued to mind speak to the young boy, “Where are you and how many are with you?”

The boy replied, “We are just off the rocks at Hat and our sail has been blown away. We are our father and my two younger brothers. Please, save us!”

Palo happened to be in the Dispatch Center when the alarm sounded. He had the duty switchboard operator connect him to the Lifesaving Station and he spoke directly to the Marine on duty.

As soon as he had the information, he mind called Ton and Kal, “My Lords Prince, only a Warrior Great Healer has the power and the range to rescue this family.”

They both replied, “We will go!”

They mind called for Mel and Gib to join them and dashed for the Departure Balcony. The four Warriors Great Healers leaped from the balcony and raced for the coast, leaving a shower of smoldering feathers and sparks behind them to mark their passage.

It was a long trip up the deserted coastline, the Flyers were pushing their energy to their maximum limits.

Others, who saw their chase by their trail of smoke, joined in the flight. By the time the rocks of Cape Hat came into view, their flight had grown to eight Warriors Great Healers and four Warriors Healers who were struggling to keep up.

They spotted a small sailing boat tossing in the angry waves and they dove for the surface. The sea was too violent for them to attempt a landing on the small boat, Ton sent to the boy, “Throw your painter into the air and we will catch it. We shall tow you to shore.”

It took the youngster several tries before the Warriors Great Healers were able to latch onto the rope. With four of them pulling, they were able to draw the fishing smack into the sheltered waters of a small cove.

As the boat beached, Kal shifted to his warrior and asked the boy, “What happened to your Father?”

The boy replied, “Sir, eerrr you won’t hurt us will you?”

Kal smiled at the young boy and replied, “I am Kal and this is Ton, we are the Lords Prince Warriors Great Healers, let us help you and your Father.”

The boy replied, “Errr, sir Prince, we have heard of you but do not know what you can do. Dad fell and hit his head against the side of the boat and I can’t wake him up!”

Kal lifted the injured man from the boat and took him up to a dry part of the beach where he began to examine the man.

The Warriors collected the other children and held them protectively in their arms while the Warriors Great Healers tended to their father.

Kal said, “Ton, assist me, this man has a severe skull fracture and he is bleeding internally. We must hurry, otherwise he cannot be saved.” Two of the Warriors Great Healers came forward saying that they would act as Cadets for them and Ton and Kal began healing the injured man.

The man’s sons looked on as the two Warriors Great Healers’ hands began to glow fiery red as life force energy passed into their father. They saw bands of flaming energy passing between the flying men who were helping their father.

As the man’s tremors eased, the two Human Hybrid Warriors, Dok and Ken, held the boys, “Your father will be alright, he is nearly healed.” As soon as the man began to come around, the teen boy slipped out of Ken’s arms and rushed to his father, crying, “Poppa, Poppa, I thought you were going to die!”

Ton explained to the man how his son had contacted the Marine Lifesaving Station in Georgia and had asked for help.

The Father looked at his son almost in disbelief, “Jef, you called so far, how?”

The boy started to cry and his father grabbed him, “Son, you are a hero, I had no idea you had such power. Without you, I would have died in that boat!”

He then looked at Ton and Kal, “I knew Jef had mind-speak, but I had no idea he could reach so far.” Ton looked at the boy, “Jef, you could be a Colony Marine and run a Life Saving Station.”

An excited Jef looked at his father, “Oh Poppa, could I?”

A year later, Marine Lance Corporal Jef was assigned as the Senior Life Saving Marine at the new Cape Hat Life Saving Station. The villagers from the small village of Hat were proud of having one of their own in command of the Life Saving Station, but none could ever be as proud as Corporal Jef’s Poppa!

Mind speak ran in the family, Jef’s two younger brothers, Jak and Fil were inducted into the Society of Red Berets at a ceremony held at Creek Village and both would become Warriors Great Healers.

The small community of fishermen at Cape Hat grew and became an important fishery, supplying seafood to the NAC and the Three Kingdoms. The Life Station nearby was the easternmost outpost of the NAC and would become the Guard Station against the pirates who were beginning to sniff around their borders.

The first sign of trouble came from a young Human Sensitive in the Malay Archipelago on the Western approaches to their civilization, about as far from Hat as it was possible to go. He had mind called his brother, who was a Human Hybrid Warrior stationed at Fort Warrior. While the two brothers were mind-speaking, the younger brother was suddenly cut off in mid-word.

The older brother, Human Hybrid Warrior Los, could not reestablish contact with his younger brother. Disturbed, he reported the incident to Lord Prince L’oki and together, they tried to contact the brother, Sork. There was no reply and no other sensitive could be contacted.

Alarmed, L’oki and Lymal called for the NACS Roger to be made ready for sea.

It was Admiral Bledsoe’s policy that every warship be maintained in a “ready to go” condition. The reactor was hot and the turbines ready at a moment’s notice. The ship’s company was fully manned and a full Company of Marines were on board.

There were over 100 Warriors Healer and 30 Warriors Great Healers stationed at Fort Warrior; leaving only enough to protect the Fort, all were racing for the huge warship. Both the Warship and the Warriors Healer all reported to Lords Prince Warriors Healers Ton and Kal. There was no problem in this, all the forces of the Warriors and Warriors Healer worked seamlessly with each other.

As soon as all were on board, the Roger slipped her mooring lines and proceeded for the breakwater at maximum power. She passed the outer harbor buoy at 160 knots and still accelerating. Once on the open sea, the control rods were withdrawn to their redlines. (to exceed the redline was tantamount to asking the reactor to explode!)

The great ship rounded Cape Darwin at more than 280 knots, somewhat beyond its design maximum speed! The ship was riding on a film of gasses that separated the hull from the water beneath it. Sea mammals were diving in fear of their lives! Lymal and L’oki stayed on the bridge, along with Los, continually trying to contact Los’ brother, Sork.

As they got closer to their objective, they began to detect the uncomfortable signs of fear that got stronger the closer they came.

L’oki told the ship’s captain, “Override the reactor, we must have greater speed!” Captain Childers ordered the engine room to override at 10% and then he went to 20%! The Engineers recognized the danger they were in and watched the radiation leakage counter for any sign of shielding failure, hoping if she was going to blow, they would have a little warning.

The massive ship was speeding at close to 310 knots and still accelerating, when Miboli Island came into view five days after they had departed Cairns, a pall of smoke hung over the island and they could detect no human life.

The Human Hybrids leaped from the ship and flew ahead, they found nothing but dead bodies and destruction. Los was one of those who had flown to the island from the ship, he searched the entire island and could not locate his brother among the bodies that had been strewn around on the ground.

The Engineers slowly lowered the control rods into the reactor to let it cool off and reduce the steaming rate, there were exhausting steam to the atmosphere to keep the reactor under control.

He reported to L’oki that his brother’s body was not to be found, nor were the bodies of his cousins and their families. That spelled only one answer to L’oki and Lymal – SLAVERS!

The two Lords Prince gathered all their Warriors Great Healers and asked them to go into meld with Los in an attempt to locate the missing people.

There were sixteen mated pair Warriors Great Healers joined in meld with the frightened young Warrior, the energy generated by the searchers blacked trees and set the grasses on fire. Further and further they drove their minds outward in search, finally, far to the west they detected a trail of fear, as black as night, it flowed through the mental ether like a terrible carrion stink.

They followed the trail to a place the locals thought of as Baargaal in the land of the Ethios. They could not identify the young Warrior’s brother, but neither could they identify anyone else, either. It was just too far to contact frightened or hurt people who were likely thinking only of their own and their family’s safety.

They raced back to their ship and pored over the ancient maps. There they discovered it was a place in the old, before times country of Ethiopia on the east coast of Africa.

Again, the mighty ship surged forward as the engineers withdrew the control rods from the reactor and the steam turbines began to groan in overload.

Captain Childers ordered the guns manned and ammunition hoisted to the ready rooms. He then ordered the new Beam Projectors charged and made ready as the ship raced westward, towards the coast of Africa. The drag on the generators helped suck up some of the excess steam.

The Warriors Great Healers readied themselves to fly patrol, searching for the slavers’ lair. There were two things that infuriated all of their kind, slavers and cannibals and they would tolerate neither to live among them. Only those who had a death wish would find that occupation attractive.

The mighty ship ploughed the sea in its race to rescue the people stolen from Miboli Island.

As soon as the coast was within flight range of the Warriors Great Healers, flight after flight of the Giant Birds of War leaped from the speeding vessel. The Warriors Great Healers could be spotted out in front of the flight and the others were struggling to keep up with them! Some were failing to keep up, but they flew on anyway, failure was NOT an option for them.

Following, in an attempt to keep up, the Human Hybrid Warriors followed, the flights of the Birds of War darkened the sky as they passed overhead. More than one sailor on the ship shuddered, thankful that they were not for whom those huge beings were hunting!

Their anger so great, their eyes lit up the darkened sky and sparks were seen in their exhaled breath.

As the great ship rounded a projecting horn of land, the terrifying flight was seen to dive towards the earth. The ship’s radar showed buildings near the shore, Captain Childers ordered the huge engines reversed to stop the speeding ship; the vessel jumped and shuddered as the reversed screws fought against the forward motion, bringing the ship to a dead stop. He ordered the gun turrets rotated towards the small city and the beam projectors elevated to firing position.

Raw energy was dripping from the beam emitters, all it would take was the touch of a button and flaming energy would pulse out, destroying all matter in its path. The beam projectors produced an energy wave very nearly the same as the energy the Warriors Great Healers passed between themselves in the course of healing a patient.

They watched as the Huge Birds of War dropped from the sky, those sailors who had served the Warriors before, refused to watch.

New sailors would have nightmares for months as they dreamed of the hell spawned creatures that destroyed the town! No mercy was given, within a few hours, except for those captured folk of Miboli Island and their rescuers, no living creature remained in the town.

The Hybrids determined that the town was an outpost of a people called the Somals, who lived further south and were ruled by a Pirate King. They queried the rescued folk and were told that the Somal King lived in great wealth in a coastal city they called Moga.

Again they consulted the ancient charts that were from before the Great Destruction and found a place called Mogadishu and believed it to be the original name of Moga.

Leaving two Platoons of Marines and sufficient Human Hybrid Warriors and Warriors Great Healers to guard and care the rescued folk of Miboli, the huge ship headed back to sea at maximum reactor power in search of Moga.

The ship’s guns and beam emitters remained at the ready, with the ammunition lockers full and emitters charged.

They found the town at the place shown on their ancient charts and a fleet of sailing ships at anchor in the harbor. There appeared to be no movement on the ships riding at anchor.

Ton and Kal led the flight of angry Birds of War as they overflew the large town and a building that had to have been the palace. They landed and shifted to their Warriors.

Men armed with spears came running at them in a foolish and futile attempt to kill them all.

The fury of the Hybrids erupted in thrown body parts and the streets running in blood and gore.

They stormed the palace, tearing all who would oppose them to small pieces.

They encountered an enormously fat man sitting upon a large chair draped in colorful cloths. The man struggled to his feet in outrage and called for his thugs to destroy these intruders, when he looked about, he was the only one still alive.

The Warriors goose-stepped the fat man, who called himself “King”, out of the building and forced him to watch as the slave pens were emptied of those being held for sale.

As punishment, they left the Somal King the only living soul in the town, alone, with neither food nor water. The jungle that surrounded the town was impenetrable, the “king” had no escape.

The rescued folk were in sorry plight, many required Turning in order to even save their lives.

They found Sork, horribly burned in the torment of torture, his only hope of survival was as a Turned Vampire. His brother, Los, insisted he be the one to turn his younger brother. With tears running down his face, Los carried the boy back to the ship and settled into an empty berthing compartment, where he made ready to sit vigil upon his beloved brother.

As he made his first bite, there was a flash of energy, the door of the compartment was blown off its hinges and the paint in the passageway burned and curled.

The young man had Turned spontaneously, he stood before Los as a Turned Vampire! Sork was radiating such power, Warriors and Healers came running to investigate the energy surge.

Even more curious, Sork’s eyes glowed an amber color rather than red and his fangs were long and curved. When he attempted to mind-speak, he was heard all the way back to Cairns!

The young Turned Vampire sat on the floor, “What kind of freak am I?”

L’oki and Lymal rushed to the brothers and held the Newly Turned Vampire, “You are a new sort, you have power beyond those of other Vampires, but you are no freak. You were turned by your loving Brother, Los, no such love could ever create a freak!”

They turned to speak to Los and saw that his and his brother’s eyes were also glowing amber and his fangs had extended into a curve.

It was to take them the entire voyage back to M’boli Island to learn how to control their mind-speak so that they did not blast all those nearby senseless. They learned they were powerful Healers, far beyond the powers of earlier Turned Vampire Healers. Further, neither were they sunlight sensitive!

Turned Vampire Sork proved to be able to move physical objects with mind power alone and shortly, his brother, Los, was able to do the same thing.

After they had completed evacuating the rescued folk from the Somal town, the great ship stood off the coast and bombarded the town with its guns and beam projectors. When they had completed their task, not a single stick remained standing from the buildings of the town and the fleet of sailing ships was debris floating on the surface of the sea. Of the Somal King, they neither cared nor bothered to find his remains.

The Huge Warship returned to retrieve the rescued inhabitants of M’boli Island and restore them to their homelands.

They remained to assist the islanders in rebuilding their homes and farms and a Conclave was called of all those who inhabited the Malay Archipelago. The delegates met on M’boli and again asked union with the Three Kingdoms. This time, their request was agreed to and the Malay Islands became a part of the Hegemony of Australia and Hawaii.

A small fort was established on M’boli, Fort West, and Human Hybrid Warrior Los and his partner, Dan, were placed in command. Los’ brother, Sork would remain with his brother as Civil Administrator of the Island Group.

A platoon of Marines, Two Great Healers and Ten Hybrid Warriors were assigned to the new fort.

In time M’boli would become a bustling trade center and marketplace for goods arriving from the East Coast of Africa.

Several more trips would be required to destroy pirates and slavers from establishing their foul enclaves on that coast. There would be destroyed wastelands spotted the length of the continent, where warships had bombarded towns with their guns and laid waste the land with their electron emitters.

It was on their last trip to survey the coast of Africa that they began to detect strange thoughts and conversations from far away. They determined that they were hearing thoughts from the islands far off the Eastern Coast of North America! They were closer to that coast from the East than they were from the west!

It would not be the last time the folk of that dark continent would have to be punished for the crime of cannibalism or slavery, but never again would they venture against the Malay Islands nor any other place protected by the forces from Fort Warrior.

The story of these fabulous beings will continue as they protect all of Humankind and help them come out of the darkness of world destruction into the light of a new age for all the Races of Man.
